Vintage Rickenbacker Guitars
Vintage Rickenbacker 330JG Guitar
This guitar was made famous by Beatles guitarist John Lennon who bought a Rickenbacker 325 Capri, which he used throughout the early days of The Beatles. John Lennon played this guitar for The Beatles' famous 1964 debut on The Ed Sullivan Show.
Many Rickenbackers both guitars and basses are equipped to be compatible with a "Rick-O-Sound" unit via an extra "stereo" output socket that allows the two pickups to be connected to different effects units or amplifiers.
Known for their distinctive jangle and chime, Rickenbacker guitars in general were equipped with lower-output "Toaster" pickups until they were phased out circa 1969-70. Hereafter, most Rickenbacker guitars were equipped with the newer design "Hi-Gain" pickups. In most cases, these pickups had twice the output of their illustrious predecessors.
This change was almost certainly due to the trend toward the louder "Rock" sounds of the 1970s. Because of their tone, the guitars tended to be favoured by Jangle Pop, Power pop and British Invasion-style groups. In particular, the older "Toaster" pickup-equipped 12-string guitars have been associated with The Who, The Byrds and The Beatles among others.

Heres a little history of some popular Vintage Fender Bass Guitars. Fender introduced the Precision Bass (P-Bass) in 1951. The P-Bass was the first electric bass and was a smash hit. The Precision bass included a Slab double cut away ash body, a single coil pickup, one piece 34" neck (Maple). The early P-Bass also featured large Kluson tuning machines heads which were later replaced by conventional geared tuning machines.
In 1957 the pickup was upgraded to a split double coil pickup and a wider head stock was added. The Fender Jazz Bass was introduced in 1960. The Fender Jazz Bass was designed to provide a mellower tone and featured 2 pickups and a 34" neck. The fingerboard was tapered and narrower than the Precision bass and the body was Alder rather than Ash.

The Gibson Les Paul is a solid body electric guitar originally developed in the early 1950s. The Les Paul was designed by Ted McCarty in collaboration with popular guitarist Les Paul, whom Gibson enlisted to endorse the new model.
Beyond shaping and body design, there are a number of characteristics that distinguish the Gibson Les Paul line from other electric guitars. For example, in a fashion similar to Gibson's hollow-body instruments, the strings of Les Paul guitars are always mounted on the top of the guitar body, rather than through the guitar body, as seen in competitor Fender's designs.
The Gibson also features a variety of colors, such as Wine Red, Ebony, Classic White, Fire Burst, and Alpine White. In addition, the Les Paul models offered a variety of finishes and decorative levels, a diversity of hardware options, and an innovative array of electric pick-up options, some of which significantly impacted the sound of electric music.
In 1957, Gibson introduced the humbucker which revolutionized the sound of the electric guitar, and eliminated the 60-cycle noise which had previously plagued guitars with single coil magnetic pickups.

Fender offered the first mass-produced solid-body Spanish-style electric guitar, the Telecaster; the first mass-produced electric bass, the Precision Bass (P-Bass); and popular Stratocaster (Strat) guitar. While Fender was not the first to manufacture electric guitars, as other companies and luthiers had produced electric guitars since the late 1920s, none was as commercially successful as Fender's.
Furthermore, while nearly all other electric guitars then were either hollow-body guitars or more specialized instruments such as Rickenbacker's solid-body Hawaiian guitars, Fender had created versatile solid-body electric guitars. These guitars were and still are popular for musicians in a variety of genres.
The core of the Fender instrument line — the Telecaster, Stratocaster, Precision Bass and Jazz Bass, remain largely unchanged from the 1950s and 1960s originals (Roberts, Jim 2003 American Basses: A Illustrated History).
